TCAS Monthly Meeting Notes
August 2011
Minutes
of the
Treasure
Coast Archeological Society Meeting
August
3, 2011
The next meeting is on Wednesday,
September 7, 2011.
The
meeting was called to order at 7:44 P.M. by Richard Hart, Sr., President
of TCAS.
The Pledge of Allegiance was led by
Richard Hart, II.
The minutes can be read on the club
website, www.tcas.us. They are also emailed to
members with email addresses on file on the last Wednesday of the month.
General Notes:
29 Members present with 9 guest
present.
Dale Thesenvitz, TCAS Secretary read
two thank you notes thanking our club for the donations for two lost family
members. One card is from Margaret Baron the sister of Mark Pearson and the
second one is from Will and Mary Rose. Mark Pearson and a family member of the
Rose's recently passed away.
I also mentioned that when I sent the
email for the Monthly Minutes that I included an updated members list. I forgot
to change the month in the header of this list. It should by July. Other than
that the members list is current.
Richard Hart started the meeting by
playing a voice mail message from his cell phone. He said that whenever he
wanted to feel depressed he plays the message he received from Skip Watson.
Skip tells the story. He was on vacation up in Findlay, Ohio where they
have a very nicely court house lawn. Not wanting to detect at the court house,
he went across the street to an old school where he was finding wheat pennies
and the object of his phone call to Richard. Skip dug down about eight inches
and pulled out a 1839 Dime. Yes, the
year is correct, 1839!
Skip also went to a swimming area where
he again was in the water as deep as he could get and found some rings. He just
could not get to the swim deck that he knew had some good finds waiting for him.
Skip also spent some time in Pensacola,
FL. Skip was chest deep in the ocean and dug down 2" - 3" and came up
with some blubs of crude oil!
Skip Watson also spoke about the
Multi-Park Hunt which will be on October 8th. It looks like it will be back up
in Melbourne because the city of Sebastian
wants a far amount of money to "use" their parks. We will meet about
9:00 - 9:30 AM probably at Wickham Park, start the hunt at 10:00 AM to about
12:00 PM and have lunch at about 12:30 PM. Prizes will be given away after
lunch. A show of hands has eighteen members interested in the hunt.
Richard asked how many people knew CPR.
About a dozen people new with only a few actually certified in CPR. The reason
he asked this is because of an incident that happened at Cocoa Beach. A man was
removed from the ocean in an unconscious condition. With about fifty (yes that
is 50) people standing around LOOKING at this man laying on the beach, no one
was doing anything. Richard jumped in and stated for someone to call 911. As it
happened, a woman was coming out of her home with a phone already calling 911.
Richard had to roll the man on his side to get the water out of his stomach and
lungs. Someone in the crowed told him to roll the man onto his back, but when
this was done the man's eyes rolled back. Putting him back on his side more
water came out. By the time paramedics arrived the man was breathing and
talking!
Mary McGee, TCAS Treasurer will see if
someone (Red Cross or other organization) could come to our meeting and talk
about CPR. Hopefully there will be enough members interested in receiving
training and certification that arrangements can be made for a class. As of
August 24th, we will have a speaker from the fire department come to the meeting
to speak about CPR. Mary asked him to speak for 20 to 30 minutes. Hopefully this
will be long enough to give us all the incentives to seek further training on
CPR and perhaps firs aid.
Mark Holshoe explained the
"finds" table. After the break Mark also explained why Skip Watson
could not display his items on the Finds Table. Winners of each category and the
winner of the Find of the Month all receive points. At our Christmas Party
(December 11th at Marsh Landings in Fellsmere) the person that has the most
points is named Master Hunter of the Year. This person cannot display their
items on the Finds Table until a new Master Hunter of the Year is named.
Mark also mentioned that if you see
someone leaving holes in the sand at the beach (or anywhere) ask them to fill in
the holes! It makes all metal detectorist's look good or bad, so let's try to
kept our image good.
Mitch King, TCAS Vice-President
mentioned that with Tropical Storm Emily (well what was Emily) the weekend of
August 6th and 7th should be good for beach detecting. Lets here your stories at
the September meeting.
